Introduction

When you work with many tabs, speed matters.

Reaching for the mouse, searching through windows, and clicking through menus adds friction, especially when you’re switching contexts or managing large tab sets. Keyboard shortcuts reduce that friction by letting you search, navigate, and act on tabs instantly.

This guide covers essential keyboard shortcuts that help you switch tabs faster, organize them efficiently, and perform common actions without breaking your flow.

TabsPrompt already helps you organize tabs faster than using the browser alone. Keyboard shortcuts build on top of that foundation and make those actions even quicker.

Open TabsPrompt

Before using any shortcuts, you need to open TabsPrompt itself.

  • Open TabsPrompt popup: ⌘ + ⇧ + K (Mac) / Ctrl + Shift + K (Windows/Linux) Opens the TabsPrompt popup where all other shortcuts are available.

Switch Between Recent Tabs (MRU-Style)

Most of the time, when switching tabs, you want to move between the ones you used most recently - not scan through every open tab or window.

TabsPrompt supports MRU (Most Recently Used) tab switching, letting you move backward and forward through your tab history based on actual usage, not tab position.

These shortcuts work inside TabsPrompt and are designed specifically for fast context switching:

  • Go to previous tab: ⌥ + Q (Mac) / Alt + Q (Windows/Linux)
Switch to the previously used tab.

  • Go to next tab: ⌥ + W (Mac) / Alt + W (Windows/Linux)
Move forward through recently used tabs.

This MRU-style navigation is often the fastest way to jump between tasks, especially when you’re alternating between a small set of tabs across different windows.

Search and Navigation (TabsPrompt Shortcuts)

After switching between recent tabs, search and navigation shortcuts help you move through larger tab sets and archives efficiently.

These shortcuts work inside TabsPrompt:

  • Go to search: /
Jump directly to the search bar to filter through your tabs.

  • Move selection up:
Move the highlight up to select the previous item in search results or lists.

  • Move selection down:
Navigate down through your tab list.

  • Select item: Space
Select a highlighted item for bulk actions.

Common Actions in TabsPrompt

Once tabs are selected, these shortcuts let you act on them immediately without using the mouse.

  • Open item:
Open the highlighted tab, group, or archive.

  • Create group from selected: Shift + G
    Group multiple selected tabs together.

  • Move selected to new window: Shift + W
Move selected tabs to a new browser window.

  • Archive selected to new archive: Shift + A
Archive multiple selected tabs for later retrieval.

  • Undo last action: ⌘ + Z (Mac) / Ctrl + Z (Windows/Linux)
Reverse your most recent action inside TabsPrompt.

View Management

TabsPrompt offers multiple ways to view and organize tabs. These shortcuts let you switch between them quickly.

  • Cycle menu items: ⌥ + 1 (Mac) / Alt + 1 (Windows/Linux)
Switch between different sections or views within TabsPrompt.

  • Cycle tab views (Browser ↔ Activity): ⌥ + 2 (Mac) / Alt + 2 (Windows/Linux)
Toggle between your active browser tabs view and the chronological Activity view.

Search Tabs from the Address Bar

You can also access TabsPrompt directly from the browser’s address bar.

  • Search from address bar: @tp →
Type @tp in the address bar, press Space or Tab, then enter your search query to search through TabsPrompt.

This is useful when you want to jump to a tab without changing your current context.

Importing URLs into TabsPrompt

Keyboard shortcuts also speed up how you bring new content into your workflow.

  • Import URLs to a group or archive: ⌘ + V (Mac) / Ctrl + V (Windows/Linux)
Copy one or more URLs and paste them inside TabsPrompt to import them into a group or archive.

  • Show help dialog: Shift + ?

Getting Started with Keyboard Shortcuts

You don’t need to memorize every shortcut at once.

Start with MRU tab switching to move between recent tabs faster, then add search, grouping, and archiving shortcuts as they become useful. Over time, keyboard-driven navigation turns tab management into a faster, more fluid part of your workflow.
